It is offered as a guide for the naked mikoshi during the Hikawa Shrine summer festival on the last Friday and Saturday of July every year. It is said that the shrine was founded in 802. The mikoshi portable shrine carriers are called happi, since when carrying the shrine, they remove their happi coats and carry the mikoshi in loincloths, rolling up their happi coats and placing them on their shoulders to protect them from the carrying poles. This is why it is called a naked mikoshi. The portable shrine is lifted high into the air and then dropped just above the ground, a soul-stirring performance. It is also known as the are (or rough) mikoshi. Owada Bayashi music follows the Edo Kanda Hayashi style, with songs such as Yatai, Shoden, Kandamaru, and Kamakura. Depending on the song, there are masked dances featuring an okame plain woman, comic male character, fox, and lion, among others. The musical instruments used consist of a large drum, a shimedaiko drum, clappers, gongs, and bamboo flutes. During the Hikawa Shrine Festival, a hayashi-dana (a stage for playing the instruments) is set up on the shrine grounds to showcase the music, adding to the lively atmosphere. The festival is believed to have begun as a rain-making ritual, and as such is never cancelled due to rain.
