People gather around the turrets set up all along the streets and dance to the Yagibushi folk song.街道（京都から日光東照宮へ幣帛(神前にささげるものの総称)を奉納する勅使が通った道）の宿場であった木崎宿（群馬県太田市）や八木宿（栃木県足利市）で、越後より売られてきた遊女が望郷にかられ唄い、それが木崎節となり八木節へと変化していったと言われる。その後、八木宿に近い堀込（足利市）に生まれ、歌唱力にすぐれた美声の渡辺源太郎が、大正時代の初めに、節回しなどを工夫し、八木節を完成させたといわれている。はじめは樽を縦にしてその鏡や胴をたたき、笛などを伴奏としたが、後には大鼓（おおかわ）や鉦などを加えた賑やかで陽気なものとなった。また、桐生八木節まつりのルーツであり、祭りの柱となっているのが祇園祭。桐生市の場合、記録上は明歴2年（1656年）が最も古く起源とし、疫除神として牛頭天王（ごずてんのう）（仏教の守護神）を祀り子供たちの手踊りで祈願した。本町3丁目の衆生院に神輿蔵を建設し、市神社の神事と天王祭礼を一緒に行ってから一気に賑わうようになったと言われている。桐生八木節まつりは、昭和39年に春の商工祭、夏の祇園祭・七夕祭・花火大会、秋の桐生祭、その他地域の祭礼などをまとめて、第1回桐生まつりとして開催され、昭和63年に現在の桐生八木節まつりと改称。毎年8月第１金・土・日曜日に桐生八木節まつりが開催され、現在では、全日本八木節競演大会、ダンス八木節、みこし渡御、鉾の曳き違いなど多彩な催しが行われる。Enjoy the grandeur and splendor of the Yagibushi Festival while experiencing the tradition!Yagibushi are folk songs that originate in the area around Kiryu, Ota, and Tatebayashi cities in Gunma Prefecture, and Ashikaga City in Tochigi. It is said that from the end of the Edo period, homesick prostitutes from Echigo sang songs at Kizaki-juku (Ota in Gunma Prefecture) and Yagi-juku (Ashikaga in Tochigi Prefecture), which were inns along the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido, the road taken by imperial envoys from Kyoto to Nikko Toshogu Shrine to make offerings of sacred objects. It is believed to have evolved into Kizakibushi and then into Yagibushi. Later, at the beginning of the Taisho era, Watanabe Gentaro from Horigome (Ashikaga) near Yagi-juku, who was blessed with an excellent singing voice, is said to have perfected the Yagibushi by devising new intonations and other features. At first, a barrel was placed upright, and the barrel head and body were struck to accompany the performance on flutes, but subsequently, it became lively and joyful with the addition of a large hand drums and gongs. The roots of the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival can be found in the Gion Festival. The earliest recorded origin for Kiryu is in 1656, when Gozu Tenno (a Buddhist guardian deity) was enshrined as a god to ward off epidemics, and children performed hand dances as prayers. The festival is believed to have become very lively after a portable shrine storehouse was constructed at the Shujoin temple in Honcho 3-chome, and the Shinto rituals of the city shrine and the Tenno Festival were held together. First held in 1964 as the Kiryu Festival, bringing together the Commerce and Industry Festival in spring, the Gion Festival, Tanabata Festival and Fireworks Festival in summer, the Kiryu Festival in autumn, as well as other local festivals, it was renamed the Kiryu Yagibushi Festival in 1988.
