Tocha (tea-identification contest) culture from the 14th century lives on! A Shinto ritual that involves tasting four kinds of tea to see who will have a bountiful harvestThis traditional event has a deep relationship with tocha, a game from around the 14th century that involved guessing the aromas and flavors of tea. This festival is held every year on the evening of February 24 at Shirokubotenman-gu Shrine. Shibucha tea, amacha tea, and chimpi orange peels are roasted using a horoku pan, ground into a powder using a tea mortar, and then mixed in different ratios to make four kinds of tea: tea 1, tea 2, tea 3, and the guest tea. The participants are then assigned names such as Flower, Bird, and Wind, and each is given a total of seven chances to taste and guess the teas.
