The number of yatai floats, which are the mainstay of the festival, currently amounts to 27 (including 14 city-designated Tangible Cultural Properties). Originally used as a stage for dancing to express gratitude to the gods, the yatai have changed over time to the current grand and elaborate carvings that decorate the entire surface. On the other hand, the performance of the musicians on the yatai is also a mainstay of the festival, and the “buttsuke,” in which multiple yatai face each other in a competition, is one of the biggest part of the festival. These yatai are indispensable for holding such a spectacular festival, and their preservation and repair are the responsibility of “Kanuma's master craftsmen“.
