Additionally, the “Bunnukii” event, where the floats from each neighborhood gather in front of the torii gate of Yakumo Shrine to compete in the rhythm, volume, and endurance of their music, is another highlight. Raise the mountain (stage backdrop) and dance on the street stage! A unique traveling outdoor theater found nowhere else in Japan. As the largest festival in Nasu-Karasuyama City, Yamaage Festival consists of the nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property “Karasuyama Yamaage Festival,” and the Yagumo Shrine mikoshi (portable shrine). The stage backdrop “mountain (Harika-yama)” (approximately 10 meters tall) is manually raised, and stage equipment is quickly set up on the street. A rare mobile outdoor theater in Japan, where local dancers perform the splendid Kabuki dance Tokiwazu-shosa to the accompaniment of shamisen and singing, using the stage backdrop as part of the performance. The “mountain switch,” where the backdrop is quickly changed, is also a highlight. At night, the illuminated mountain and Gama create an enchanting atmosphere. The festival originated in 1560, when the lord of Karasuyama Castle invited Gozu Tenno to Karasuyama in order to pray for the prevention of epidemics, a bountiful harvest, and peace in the land. Initially, the festival featured sumo wrestling and kagura lion dances, but as Edo Kabuki increased in popularity and Tokiwazu dance became fashionable, the two were incorporated into the festival as dedication performances, eventually evolving into the Kabuki dance we see today. The “Yamaage Festival” is held in rotation among six neighborhoods, taking place over three days—Friday, Saturday, and Sunday— including the fourth Saturday of July each year. The “yama” refers to the “harikayama,” a wooden frame made of bamboo woven in a lattice pattern, covered with layers of Karasuyama’s specialty washi paper, and adorned with painted landscapes on top. The term “yamaage” originated from the practice of lifting this “yama” by human strength.
