Yamabushi mountain priests clad in traditional robes, together with the fearsome goriki, force a heaping mound of red bean rice upon their guestsAccording to oral tradition, this New Year celebration has been passed down for more than 650 years in the Hokkoji region. In this ritual, the gods descend upon the human world to enjoy a feast offered with the utmost pure heart. As such it is believed to have been heavily influenced by the Nikko shugendo ascetic Buddhist practices. The yamabushi (mountain priests) emerge wearing Buddhist robes along with hats worn by ancient court nobles, and carrying pilgrim’s staffs. They are accompanied by the goriki, an imposing figure wearing a frightening mask and carrying a club. It is based on an legend where a master archer joined forces with the God of Mt. Futara and pierced the eye of a giant centipede that was an incarnation of the God of Mt. Akagi, when the God of Mt. Futara and the God of Mt. Akagi were at war at Senjogahara over lakes, plateaus, hot springs, and territories lying between them a long time ago.
