In this event, known as the “strange festival of Kanto,” the participants jostle over the fire sparks.Teams of organizations in the city battle it out in this highly competitive event, attempting to put out each others’ lanterns attached to bamboo poles of nearly 20 meters. It takes place in a bamboo palisade with a height of approximately 10 meters in front of Koga Station. The festival is known in the Kanto region for its uniqueness, particularly its dynamic, thrilling, and highly competitive energy, including the sound of bamboo breaking and sparks flying when two lanterns hit each other. This unique event is said to have its roots in the Edo Period, when the priest of the Nogi Shrine returned home after visiting the affiliated shrines of the area’s seven villages.
