The Hitachi-no-kuni Sosha-gu Shrine Grand Annual Festival, also known as the “Ishioka Festival,” is considered one of the three greatest festivals in the Kanto region. Each Horojishi Lion, which parades through the town during the festival, consists of a shed on top of a large cart, usually draped with a two-tone hood (body curtain) and a large lion’s head attached to the front of it. The size of the lion’s head varies from town to town, ranging from 50 to 60 cm wide and weighing around 20 kg. One person wears it and dances along the way. The standard shed is 2 m wide, 5 m long, and 2.5 m high. The color of hood on the shed is unique to each town. Traditional hayashi music performers riding inside the shed play large and small taiko drums, the flute, and the sho handbell. While the music is simple, the sight of the Horojishi Lion dancing to the tune, moving from left to right, up and down, is very impressive. The Horojishi Lion with a shed is an ultra-rare variant, seldom encountered elsewhere in Japan, and is unique to “Ishioka Festival”.
