A view of plum blossoms that takes your breath away! Enjoy a moment of luxury in spring at one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.The Mito Plum Blossom Festival, which has been held over 120 times, is a festival of flowers that welcomes the slightly early arrival of spring. The venues are Kairakuen, which is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, and the Kodokan school of the Mito Clan, which was one of the largest clans in Japan. There are roughly 3,000 plum trees of about 100 species on the spacious grounds of Kairakuen, and various kinds can be seen during different times of the season as there are those that bloom early, bloom mid-season, and bloom late. There are various events scheduled to be held during this period.Giant floats parade around town. Witness how they’re pulled along, sliding atop wooden frames–amazing!This important spring festival is held at Sawawachigi Shrine in Otsu-cho, Kitaibaraki City once every five years. The main part of the festival, the float procession, is held on May 3rd. The floats, which sit atop special“boats”made for this purpose and are decorated with images of seafood, are brought through the town, accompanied by traditional music sung by the lead“seaman”or instrumental music. The parade winds through the area with the help of some 500 people. The bottom of the“boat”has no wheels. It is comprised of some 100 wooden pieces fit together in a cross pattern. About 20 to 30 strong young men swing the boat from left to right, sliding it on the wooden frame. It can be accessed on foot from Mito Station.約300年の歴史の中で地形が変わり、神船を渡していた海上の航路も今は道路に。道筋を変えず神船を渡すため、陸上で曳き船を行っている。The area’s topography has changed over the past 300 years, with the sea route that the floats once traversed now being a road.
